A minimalist life encourages us to be purposeful and aware of we do and don’t do. These may be little examples but you get the idea. I’d rather spend money on an activity for my kids at the weekend than on another pair of shoes sitting in my closet. Not only does this drain our time, energy, money, freedom and other precious resources but it takes us away from the rest of what life has to offer – the meaningful and important.Īs a very simple example, I’d rather be heading off out for a day with my family than doing the housework. This room is amazingly easy to keep clean and tidy as there’s nothing in it to move, tidy or clear away. There are no cushions, rugs or little ornaments. There’s nothing hanging on the walls, displayed on shelves, resting on table tops. One of my step-sons uses it as a bedroom when he stays with us, but apart from a chair that opens out into a bed, a side table and a floor-standing lamp, the room is empty. This means we donated our unwanted furniture and have packed stuff away that we want to take with us but that we won’t be needing over the coming weeks, although we can still get to everything if we need to.Īs we’ve condensed our belongings, we now have one room that’s pretty empty. To avoid the last minute rush to sort and pack our stuff, we decided to declutter before moving, well in advance of our moving date. Although we won’t be moving for a while, my husband and I decided we wanted to make our move as easy and stress-free as possible.
